Jane is the wife of John, a prominent doctor, and sister of other prominent doctor. She's diagnosed by them as having a “temporary nervous depression” or a slight “hysterical tendency”, and is forbidden from working, being put to rest. They had a newborn baby and a nanny called Mary to take care of him.

→Jane é esposa de John, um proeminente doutor, e irmã de outro proeminente doutor. John rented for the summer a mansion after dealing w/ the legal details w/ the heirs and co-heirs of the property. The mansion was uninhabited for many years; it’s located at a bay and have a private wharf. After moving to the mansion, Jane began to feel herself freqüently angry w/out apparent reason. Also, she thinks that the mansion is haunted; but John dismissed all these claims.

Their bedroom was located at the upper floor of the mansion. Because it was a former nursery, it have bars in the windows and a gate at the stairs. It have a yellow wallpaper; in a certain point of it, Jane seemed to see an optical illusion w/ "outrageous angles". She complained to her husband about it. He saw it as a mere delusion from her; at first he considered to change the wallpaper; but later he said that treating her delusions as something real would worsen her condition.

They’re visited by Jennie, John’s sister, who will spend some time w/ them.

Jane seemed to see the figure of a woman w/ two eyes staring at her in the wallpaper. At one point of her diary, she wrote: "I know a little of the principles of design, and I know this thing was not arranged on any laws of radiation, or alternation, or repetition, or symmetry, or anything else that I ever heard of.".

As the weeks passes, her mental health deteriorates, as she began to weep w/out any reason when she's alone, but control herself to avoid to weep before other people. She feels a fortunate thing that the baby's room isn't the one w/ the yellow wallpaper.

In one night w/ moonlight, she saw the figure trying to get out from the wallpaper, but John woke up and the figure stopped moving.

She figured out that the figure becomes animated at the night, specially in nights w/ moonlight.

One day, she watched John w/out being seen by him, and saw that he was staring to the wallpaper. She also saw Jennie touching the wallpaper w/ the hand; when she asked what she's doing, Jennie is caught surprised, and answers that the wallpaper stains everything it touches. So, Jane became determined to don't let anyone else to discover the secret of the wallpaper.

→Um dia, ela observou John sem ser vista por ele, e viu que ele tava olhando pro papel de parede. As the days passes, she alone began to feel an foul smell associated to the wallpaper. Through synesthesia, she calls it a "yellow smell".

She began to see the apparition of the woman also by the day.

She decides to set free the woman in the wallpaper in the day before their last day in the house. So she threw the key by the window and began to tear the wallpaper. She wanted to jump by the window, but the bars there wouldn't allow it.

When John came home, he found the door locked. In despair, he calls for a axe to the people in the house. But Jane tells him that he threw the key. So he went to the front entrance and found the key on the ground. He came back to the door and opened it. He sees the wallpaper destructed and his wife covered w/ yellow stains.

I’m abridging and translating this work solely because I see a connection w/ the mythopoeia of Hastur and The King In Yellow. I think that Jane became possessed by Hastur and/or the entity seen by her was his avatar.
