The Red One / A Coisa Vermelha

→İn the Ringmanu Beach, in Guadalcanal, Solomon İslands, a strange sound could be heard at distance. A scientist called Bassett was there to investigate w/ Sagawa, his “Bêche-de-mer”-speaking servant from New Hanover – Papua New Guinea (according to the original work, Sagawa had a “queer little monkeyish face”), that carried his equipment, including his naturalist shotgun. Bassett wondered if the partner of Captain Bateman, of the Nari blackbirder, died from delirium tremens.

Blackbirder are ships involved in the blackbirding operations. Blackbirding is when people kidnapps and coerce natives into forced labor.

Os nativos os emboscaram. →The natives ambushed them. One of them attacked Bassett w/ a tomahawk (indigenous-like axe w/ an 18-20in – 45-50cm long handle); he put the hand to block it and lost 2 fingers and had a minor wound on the head; so he killed him w/ the shotgun. The other beheaded Sagawa; Bassett wounded him w/ the shotgun, but he fled w/ Sagawa’s head.

→The other natives chased him by the island, trying to shoot arrows on him; he shot w/ the shotgun in the natives that ducked behind the bushes. The weapon used to hurt him was poisoned, so by the next day his eyes swollen and he nearly fainted.

→The natives ended the chase in the edge of a grassland. Bassett wept involuntarily. He fainted and Balatta, a native girl (according to the original work, Balatta had “apish features”), found him. She wanted to kill him, but gave up by seeming him as exotic.

→He was taken to the native village (according to the original work, a village of “monkey-men”). One of the men took the shotgun; as he doesn’t knew how to use it, he accidentally cocked the gun and shot it, blowing the head of other native.

→In the village, every one followed a local taboo: Balatta couldn’t touch anything related to the breadfruit (Artocarpus Altilis); Ngurn couldn’t touch anything related to crocodiles; Vngngn couldn’t touch women. Once a nine years old girl accidentally touched Vngngn, and later she was never seen again.

→Bassett was curious w/ the “Star Born” term. So he said that Ngurn could have his head if he took him to see the Red One; but Ngurn pointed out that he would have his head anyway. So he threatened to kill Ngurn to kill him w/ the shotgun, that he called the “Baby Thunder”, if he didn’t take him to see the Red One; but Ngurn pointed out that sooner Bassett killed him, sooner someone else would kill Bassett.

→She helped him to enter in the area of the Red One. It was a hilly area. There they found the Red One. It was a sphere make of an unknown iridescent red metal of 200ft (about 61m) of diameter. The path to the Red One was paved by bones of the sacrificed people and small fallen stone idols representing animal deities; it was notable that turtle and shark idols were absent. Walking around the sphere, they found the mortal remains of the girl that accidentally touched Vngngn. Among them there were idols of figures using strange helmets. Next to the sphere was a wooden king-post w/ a clapper/striker suspended by rope, like a battering ram; it was carved w/ helmeted figures sitting in the mouths of crocodiles. He made a thrusting strike in the sphere w/ his pocket knife, and it bounced w/ a loud sound. He wanted to make a stronger strike, but Balatta asked him to stop due to fear. They came back to the village.

A saúde de Bassett piorou, devido a febre. Sua intenção era escapar pra praia pra pedir carona com o capitão de algum navio, mas ele sabia que nunca escaparia com vida. →Bassett’s health grew worse, due to the fever. His intention was to escape to the beach to ask for a ride w/ the captain of some ship, but he knew that he wouldn’t escape alive. So he made an agreement w/ Ngurn: he would take Bassett to see the Red One, and he allowed Ngurn to kill him there, so he would have his head sooner.

→Ngurn and some other men of the village took Bassett in a litter before the Red One. So they striked it w/ the clapper of the king-post, what produced a loud sound. Bassett’s shotgun was in his side on the litter, so he had the idea to kill Ngurn w/ it; however, he gave up this idea, because Ngurn “played squarer than the square” w/ him (dealt w/ him the right way), and also he had no conditions to escape at all. So Bassett made the signal w/ the hand to Ngurn (and, according to the original, Bassett doesn’t even remembered Balatta because she was “a woman merely and only and undesired”.) and he executed him w/ the hatchet.
