Later the feeling grew weaker and disappeared, so he remembered the poem the woman told him. So he went to sleep.

He asked who was her and what was that being.

→She said then that she would leave him forever. So he answered that if so he would stay in the house to understand the phenomenon better and try to trace her. So she changed her mind and she accepted to see him more times. However, she said that she could only visit him a few times before the “gates” to close upon her, but she refused to explain more about that.

Na madrugada, o Ser Negro apareceu diante dele vindo do limiar entre as dimensões. Ele o avisou que a mulher era sua presa, e disse pra Roger deixar a casa; ele disse que ela pertencia a ele pelo pacto dos séculos. O ser estava tentando tomar o controle dele mentalmente. →İn the dead of night, the Dark One appeared before him from the threshold between the dimensions. He warned him that the woman was his prey, and said to Roger to leave the house; he said that she belonged to him by the pact of the centuries. The being was trying to take control of him mentally. But Roger resisted and said that he refused to leave the farm.

So the family decided to ambush the supposed man. When they entered in the bedroom, actually it was a monster. A cleric was among them, so the monster was drove off when he began to read aloud the gospel of St. John. The girl were pregnant and give birth to a monster; so such child was burnt.

She answered him that he just was caught in the trap of the Dark One, that showed him the book to make him mentally weaker. She said that she would leave him forever. So he make an involuntary move to turn on his flashlight. So he saw her spectral form for a brief moment before she disappeared.

→The Professor, Phillida’s father, visited them. He provided a scientific explanation or the phenomena. The marsh gas (caused by the putrefaction) caused suffocation and hallucinations. The sounds were the gas bubbles bursting inside the marsh; or perhaps it was because the new dam was larger than the older, so the mud basin were slipping towards the dam, producing that sound, until the cloudburst from the storm destroyed it.

Roger o perguntou então como Desire sabia de suas experiências com o Ser Negro. O Professor respondeu que ela inconscientemente o influenciou nas lendas da família dela. Ele perguntou a Roger se ele realmente acreditava que Desire descendia duma união dum espírito maligno com um ser humano; o Professor disse que a criança devia ser de Sir Austin.

İn the tale «The Dreams in the Witch House» (by H. P. Lovecraft), Walter Gilman used the cruciƒіx to repeal temporarily the witch Keziah Mason when she grabbed his throat. Alas, because had he kept his concentration in brandishing the cruciƒіx instead of worrying about releasing her hands from his neck, he could maybe have survived to his encounter against her. ¿ But why Keziah Mason was temporarily repealed by the cruciƒіx? Here are some theories:

This is corroborated by the tale «Morag-Of-The-Cave» by Margery Harriet Lawrence, where Father Mahoney, a local priest, gave to a man called İan a box containing both a silver cruciƒіx and a paper containing a runic magic spell; the intent was to use the runic magic spell to repeal a race of monstrous sea beings, called «Eolas Of The Sea» in the local folklore. The excerpt says: «Father Mahoney had given İan not only the charm of the Church’s holiness, but the charm of the old-world magic as well, lest the Church be impotent against those Things which are older than she is.»
